Walk among the heather.....

Take a walk among the heather with me here in Holland. This time of year is so beautiful. It is the end of the season for heather and the color is fading fast.

Life for heather, like many things in nature, is short. Its time is fleeting.

Even the fungi are shortlived. Yet if we stop and really look, we can enjoy the fleeting moment in all its perfection.

We too are here for a short time and should live each and every moment to its fullest. As the summer season passes into autumn, take a moment today to really look at something in your garden or take a walk in nature. Don't let this moment today pass you by...

(Photos taken in Doldersum, Holland last week during our vacation. Click to enlarge and see the heather fields in detail.)

These words were written by Charlotte Bronte about her sister Emily who had passed away...

"For my part I am free to walk on the moors - but when I go out there alone - everything reminds me of the times when others were with me and then the moors seem a wilderness, featureless, solitary, saddening - My sister Emily had a particular love for them , and there is not a knoll of heather, not a branch of fern, not a young bilberry leaf not a fluttering lark or linnet but reminds me of her."

How I love walking through the heather! It reminds me of hiking across the Yorkshire Dales ~ the only problem there was the uneven ground and it was all too easy to disappear into a hole full of water!!

I was struck by home much Emily's sister must have loved her. That must be so nice... to have a sister as a good friend.

I really had to work this morning, but when I had taken Pelle to school, I noticed how stunningly beautiful the world looked, so I took a long walk 'op de hei' as well. I must have looked like a complete looney, all alone with a big smile on my face, but boy - was it beautiful!

That heather is so pretty. I remember seeing it in Scotland.
Hope you had a nice time today with the lacemakers.
Love you, Mom

I had no idea that Heather grew like that in Holland. See how sheltered we can be, even in this globaly connected world. I love your idea of looking at something in detail. To really see it and appriciate it. I often miss the most wonderful things when I let my slef rush, and scurry . Thank you for the reminder to seek out the special moments, in the world around us. I don't dwell on what I might have missed, though I want to capture as much as I can. There is so much to enjoy!

the heather is beautiful! Is it scented?
As I look at the pictures, I am imagining it smells like lavender but that is probably wrong.

enjoy your beginning of fall!

Hi, Heidi! Lovely heather...reminds me of the heathered mountain walks DH & I took in mid-Norway some years ago...Such a treat to see these beautiful spots you share with us, and the tender words of Emily Bronte...We're just back from our own trip away, and getting over the jet lag--LOL! I'll talk to you and see here again soon! ((HUGS))

Hello Heidi, I have been to the Yorkshire moors once and treasure my memories of those heather fields. Stunning they were ... Nice memory of the Brontë sisters, by the way. How plants or things can give you the strong feeling of ties and bonds for ever ...

Hugs, Carolien
