A cup of comfort...

In Holland, a cup of tea is often referred to as a cup of comfort ('kopje troost'). Since I talked about comfort last week in my post, I thought I would share another thing of comfort to me...tea. I love a cup of hot strong English breakfast tea with a little milk. It tastes good any time of the day and with anything or nothing to accompany it. Now I also love a good cup of Earl Grey, Darjeeling or peppermint tea but English breakfast is my true favorite.

So when I set up our sideboard after taking down holiday decorations, I decided to get a book out I have shared with you before. I really love this book and can recommend it to anyone who loves Jane Austen and/or tea. It is a fun book to read. It is called "Tea with Jane Austen" by Kim Wilson.

I tried to coordinate a few other items with the book ~ a Staffordshire cup and saucer, a silver teaspoon for loose tea, my antique tea caddy, and a little piece of bobbin lace I made a number of years ago.

Perhaps this chapter of the book is what I should be reading now (see photo below). I wanted to take a moment to update you on my health since many have been asking. I have now been referred by our doctor to the academic hospital in a city near us as I have a very enlarged thyroid. It is swollen overall but she thinks there is also pressure on my windpipe which is causing severe breathing problems when I try to lay down. It is also the cause of my cough and persistent clearing my throat. This team of doctors will do the testing and all treatments including arranging a surgeon if and when it comes to that point. She assured me that there have been great advances lately so we have to wait and see where we go from here.

I do admit that I am just exhausted as we are getting little sleep for the last month. I am so grateful to Jos for going through this with me. He gets up each time, makes me hot tea and sits with me until I feel I can try sleeping again. With him having to work three days a week in another country, it is really starting to put a strain on us both. We have made some major decisions about changing things in our life which I will tell you about another time. I am sorry that I am not getting around to your blogs as often as I normally would. I may also have times in the coming weeks as with this past week that I will post less. Thank you all for your care and concern and positive thoughts!

I do not remember that tea cup. Hummmm. I know how much you love a cup of tea. You come by that honest, your Gramma was a big tea drinker too. Her Dad came right from England. Jane Austin is sure one of your favorites. I hope you decided to just go to that hospital group and don't wait until they call you.
Love you bunches, Mom

Heidi, just wanted to let you know that dealing with a thyroid issue can be a pain; but once diagnosed is very easy to live with. I have hypothyroidism (thyroid not working), and just take a pill a day and things are okay. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Heidi
Thanks for sharing!
isnt this strange...sitting in another country, getting to know fantastic ladies, be concerned about their health and life...and one really doesnt want to write down everything on the blog - on the other side - when we write it down - at last...it appeares that everyone is happy to know whats wrong with you and get even more concerned! haha!
Hope the doctors can help you now.
I also have a thyroide problem!
I have hypotheroses (I am low, you are high arent you?) (correctly spelled...?) and have to take medication every day for the rest of my life. But I feel ok, have low energy though..I tend to take energy I dont have...and thats why Im so tired all the time. Freezing easily etc...
But the breathing problem is worse - hope they can help you really soon my friend!
Lots of love from Norway

...and for your comment about a cup of tea... I just love tea myself.
I was an au-pair in London - and there I really drank a lot of tea!
But everyone was frustrated that I didnt want any milk in...
We norwegian girl do not use milk in our tea....
and talking of tea...my husband had the flu last week and felt terribly - i put a bucket of boiling water next to his bed when he felt he couldnt breathe - and put five tags of peppermint tea in them - and everytime he felt bad, he just breathed in ... he calmed down easily.

Heidi,

My prayers are offered for your good health. A cup of tea can't always cure our ailments, but it can sure provide a relaxing respite from the act of ailing.

Hope you will soon be feeling better. Tea is a cure all for what ails you physically, emotionally, and spiritually. There is not much that cannot be solved over a good cup of tea. Take care!!

What a lovely way to describe a cup of tea (comfort). I think it is true especially when it is cold or you are feeling under the weather. I'm sorry to hear that you are having health problems and hope the doctors can get it all corrected soon. In the meantime my thoughts will be with you.

What a lovely post. Sitting down with a cup of tea is something I haven't done in ages.

It's good to hear you're finally getting some answers about your health. Here's hoping for a quick resolution. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Tea is my cup of comfort too! :o) I have long loved tea and the custom of pereparing it and savoring it--either alone or with other. The Jane Austen tea book is a lovely one, isn't it? And how sweet Jos brings you tea...:o) My hubby does that for me too. We always make tea for each other--it's like a little love token during the day. Oh, but I am glad to hear some news here of how you are really doing these days and what's happening. I am sorry you are feeling poorly and exhausted...I do hope the doctors will take good care of you and cam resolve the thyroid issues so you can live and rest well again. Keep us posted when you can. Just concentrate on keeping well. Thinking of you and sending ((BIG HUGS))

The AACE (2005) recommends the self exam for several categories of thyroid patients or these of risk groups called “Thyroid neck check”:
“stand in front of the mirror;
have a light source on the side
tilt your head back
watch/feel your neck while swallowing
if you see/feel hard lumps you may have nodule;
If mass disappears as you stretching your neck or not moving while you are swallowing, this is not thyroid related”

in any case ultrasound to check the "echotexture" of the gland is recommended

This sounds like a delightful book. I'll have to look for it, in my local library system.

I'm so sorry you are having health difficulties! And I wish you a speedy resolution to them. Let's hope that this coming team of doctors will find exactly what's needed.

And please don't worry about how often you blog. And especially don't worry, about how often you visit other blogs and comment in them. None of us should ever worry thus, at least in my humble opinion.

And this is especially true, when one is having any sort of difficulties. Everyone has some sort of difficulties, at one time or another. And we all will understand.

Gentle hugs to you and to your loving husband,
Aunt Amelia

Like several others I too have an under active thyroid, actually it is a multinodular goiter. Sounds awful, but just means that I have low thyroid and must take one little pill each day. Hopefully you will get good medical advice and feel better soon. As for tea, I love Irish Breakfast tea in the morning. I have been drinking hot tea in the morning all my life. (Remember I'm from TN and you have to differentiate between hot tea and iced tea!) Feel better soon and I will keep good thoughts going your way!

Like you, I like tea too. But of late, I found that drinking tea causes me to collect gas - bloat.
A friend of mine advise me to change to coffee. According to him, I am more of a coffee man.

Don't worry too much about your thyroid.

Dear Heidie, i hope a solution will be found quickly for your health-problems.I think it's fantastic that you still "treat" us every time with the most beautiful posts !!!
You know we are tea-lovers !!
That's one of the reasons i kept this little poem that i once read on a blog.....now i want to give it to you, to cheer you up a little :)

The Tea Party (For a little girl having a little tea party all by herself.)

I had a little tea party
One afternoon at three
T'was very small
Just I, myself and me.
Myself ate up the sandwiches
While I drank up the tea
T'was also I who ate the pie
And passed the cake to me.

Have a nice day and greetings to Jos.
Janneke.

Good morning Heidi, this looks like a sweet book...one, I think I'll put on my wish list. I find tea most comforting too, maybe it reminds me of when I was little and my granma would make me tea and honey when I had an upset tummy...it always helped.
I pray the new doctors and tests with be helpful and you will be on the road to wellness. Sending hugs and good thoughts your way...Linda

Dear Heidi - I'm so sorry that you are under the weather and hope so much the doctors will soon have you feeling much, much better.

Take some time off from blogging so you can have plenty of rest - we won't forget you, not possible!!
Jos is a great guy to help you through the rough patches, especially at night - sending him a hug of thanks.

Glad you like your tea just like me - with a dash of milk - that way we will, some day, sit a share a pot together - Earl Grey/English Breakfast, either will be perfect.

Love and hugs - Mary.
