Welcome April!

A new month already. I am amazed at how time really does fly. It is the first day of April and I thought I would share some pages from "The Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady". This is the earlier diary written by Edith Holden which is lesser known than "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady". It is not as prettily published as the "Country Diary" but does once again contain some of Edith's beautiful drawings.

Some of the folk~lore she used are:

"April weather, rain and sunshine both together."

"When April blows his horn;
Tish good for both hay and corn."

This poem I dedicate to my mother. We always say the beginning of this to each other since England is our favorite place...

"O, to be in England
Now that April's there,
And whoever wakes in England
Sees, some morning, unaware,
That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf
Round the elm~tree bole are in tiny leaf
While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough
In England ~ now!"

I hope April will bring you growth and sunny moments. I know my mother and I will now be wishing we were in England today.

OH YESSS, lets go. Next year, we need to plan to go back. We need to go back to Scotland, the Cotswolds, orrrrrr Cornwall. LOL. I did after all keep saying we were going there. I am ready, are you? Thanks for the poem. This time, your car will make it up the hills without us saying "I think I can, I think I can. LOL.
Love you, Mom

Here I sit, procrastinating - should be heading out the door, but glad that I'm not! I also have The Country Diary of An Edwardian Lady - lovely to look at it on a day that doesn't yet promise spring in any way but it's spot on the calendar.
I hope you and your mum fulfill that dream of an April trip to England!

Such a lovely book, one of my favourites.
Being English myself but living in France, I know what it is to 'pine' for my country !

Heidi,
You and Nancy would have loved it here in England today. It is such a beautiful Spring day full of slanting sunshine and even the temperatures have gone up a little. The hour has made all the diffeence and the evenings are beginning to feel quite mellow
Looking at the beautiful delicate watercolours in Edith's earlier book really bring this season to life. What a lovely poem you have dedicated to Nancy, maybe one day we will all be together here in England :>)

Lovely post Heidi, England is finally experiencing the whisperings of spring (although there's snow forecast again at the weekend!). the birds have started their beautiful chorus and you can smell the hint of spring in the air

Dear Heidi!
This book is lovely and this was a beautiful post. It is bursting spring here right now but it will not last for long. I'm always sad at how short our spring is.

Hugs! Nancy

That's a wonderful old poem Heidi!

You're right about spring possibly arriving here in April. Most of the snow is gone and I heard that we should have temps in the 40s this weekend! I have so much I want to do in the yard and gardens! Wish you were here to help and advise me!
God bless.

I can hardly believe it is April already... even though I have been longing for it to come for so long. But now it really does feel like spring is here, even here in Norway. All the snow and frost is gone, and we can feel spring in the air. Not that I have had much time to notice it lately, with all the lambing and some complications with it... We have got 16 lambs so far, and expect a total of about 25. We will probably keep a few of them, but most of them will end up as food on the table... eventually. But I prefer not to think about it at the moment....

I was not aware there being an other book by Edith Holden apart from The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady. I do love her beautiful drawings and the sweet notes she writes.

Than you, dear Heidi, for all your lovely comments in my blog. I do again wish to thank you for them, as thy always bring me special joy. Do enjoy these lovely spring days to come.

Oh, Heidi, I love that poem. And I really must read (buy?) those books. I keep hearing about them, and they seem so perfect. I love the way you and your mother travel together.
